Time to set up the hedgehog house

On my regular slug foray last night - which is getting ealier as the evenings rapidly shorten - I spotted my first hedgehog in the garden. I have seen hedgehogs nearby on Clober golf course a few times but never in the garden. I mainly see them as roadkill. It was very exciting. It was climbing up a step towards me from the lower lawn up on to the new upper lawn and possibly the recently created pond. Not wanting to scare it or interfere with its journey, I sneaked quietly sideways and in a small circuitous route round through the swing, I crept up on it from behind. I imagined it still frozen, one paw up on the step waiting patiently for me to leave, much like toads do, but it had vanished. It must have moved pretty quickly to have escaped me. So today I have set up the hedgehog house I built last Autumn, placing it in a pleasant sunny spot and filling it with mown grass and hedge clippings. I will get some dried meal worms and place them in or near the entranceway to try to encourage it to visit regularly and notice the inviting accomodation. It will be lovely if it does come again and decide to overwinter here. I can make sure it has some food if it wakes up hungry at any point during its hibernation.
