Our first pond visitors

Its a couple of weeks since the pond was finished and about a week after the plants went in and things are looking OK in the pond. Its not a thing of beauty, fringed by a mud heap, but the plants I put in seem happy and the flag iris that arrived heavily trimmed has doubled in height. The best thing however is that insects have started to arrive and we now have one resident pondskater, shown below eating a small fly, and a small beetle that I saw diving down near the rock island. Only two insects but its exciting and satisfying to have created this new ecosystem.
