Help log and identify butterflies
I just used the butterfly app on my phone to help identify and then log my first butterfly sighting this year! It was a small tortoiseshell I saw flitting around the garden this sunny morning. To install the app, search for 'Butterfly Conservation' on your phone's Play store and download 'iRecord Butterflies' by Natural Aptitude Ltd. It has some good images to help identify your butterfly, good information, and the GPS function of smart phones make submitting your location easy. Submitting recordings helps develop an understanding of what is happening to butterflies and the environment they depend on. The iRecord app is for submitting serendipitous butterfly sightings - one or more butterflies you might see anywhere in the UK whenever you are out. If you did the search for 'Butterfly Conservation' you should see that there is a further app called 'Big Butterfly Count'. This app is specifically to be used to submit all butterfly sightings in a chosen location over a 15 minute period within the months of July and August. Happy spotting.
