Slug traps - week 2 summary

If you recall from earlier posts, I have been hunting and trapping slugs in a few areas of our garden. At the end of the first week I had trapped a total of 33 slugs and manually picked 8 off the sunflowers. At the end of week 2 the numbers are as follows:

Trap 1: single pot (sunflowers) - 9 slugs (plus 1 found on the sunflowers)

Trap 2: single pot (runner beans) - 8 slugs.

Trap 3: three chamber trap (lettuces) - 0 slugs.

So total slug numbers are down from 41 to 18, with trapped slug numbers roughly half of the previous week's value, and an even more dramatic drop in slugs found on the sunflowers (only 1 compared to 8 the previous week). This reduction in numbers likely results from the hunting and trapping program. An interesting feature of the data that is starting to emerge is a general trend for trapped slug numbers to drop off after 4 or 5 days after new beer has been put out. Perhaps it is loosing some of its scent or appeal, maybe arguing for more frequent changes of beer. I still resent the expense and waste of beer and beer cans (although they are recycled) so this week I will try a new bait to see what happens. Watch this space!
