As a source of nectar, pollen and seeds for insects and birds, sunflowers justifiably sit on some top ten lists of nature-friendly garden plants such as one from the BBC. They also offer a sheltered spot to hang out during inclement weather. Sunflowers, often associated with sunnier climes, grow well in our area, and all I have had to do is provide some support and keep the slugs at bay. The ones in our Milngavie garden are just coming out in flower and already look beautiful.

This morning its dreich and a bee is hunkered down under the petals out of the wind and rain. Yesterday, when the sun was out they were visited by many insects such as numerous hoverflies and bees.
