Runner beans do well in Milngavie. I grew Scarlet Emperor this year which is meant to be a good choice for most of Scotland. According to 'Fruit and Vegetables for Scotland' by Cox and Beaton, Tracey Norman a Glasgow allotmenteer recommends White Lady. Harvest regularly to encourage more beans. Top and tail them, de-string with a potato peeler, slice diagonally, boil in salted water until just tender but still green and slightly crisp, and serve with butter and freshly ground pepper and a sprinkling of Maldon sea-salt. Delicious.
